Orange County grew up on citrus. R. H. Gilman planted the county's first commercial Valencia orange grove in 1875, on land that is now the Cal State Fullerton campus, and Anaheim's 1919 Sunkist packing house now runs as a food hall. Cordelia Knott started serving fried chicken dinners in Buena Park in June 1934, and Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant is still frying.

Today the county cooks a lot more than chicken and oranges. Little Saigon runs along Bolsa Avenue in Westminster and Garden Grove, Anaheim's Little Arabia fills the Brookhurst corridor, Huntington Beach closes Main Street for Surf City Nights every Tuesday, and the OC Fair takes over Costa Mesa every July and August.

Little Saigon in Westminster and Garden Grove

Little Saigon grew from a handful of shops: Saigon Market opened in 1976, Danh's Pharmacy and Hoa Binh Market followed in 1978, and Frank Jao's Asian Garden Mall (Phuoc Loc Tho) opened in 1987. On February 10, 1988, Westminster designated a 1.5-mile stretch of Bolsa Avenue as the Little Saigon Tourist Commercial District. ABC7 calls it "the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam," and the area counted more than 11,000 businesses in 2023. Little Saigon's Pho 79, opened in 1982 by Tho and Lieu Tran, won a James Beard America's Classics award in 2019. The Tet Festival, started in 1982, comes back every year around Lunar New Year.

Pho shops and banh mi counters run long days on big stock pots and cold prep. They order commercial ranges for the stock, sandwich prep tables for the line, two-door reach-in refrigerators and freezers for proteins and herbs, and work tables for prep.

Valencia Groves and the Anaheim Packing District

Orange County still had 67,263 acres of Valencias in 1948, and in 1936 the county grew one-sixth of the nation's Valencias. At the peak, 45 packing houses were running in the county. Placentia says on its own history page that it "was the first to market the Valencia orange," and the Santa Fe rerouted its line through town in 1910 to haul the fruit. Fewer than 100 acres of Valencias were left by the 2000s, but the Anaheim Packing House, the only packing house left in Anaheim, reopened on May 31, 2014 as a 42,000 square foot food hall. With the 1925 Packard Building, it makes up the Packing District.

Food hall stalls get a small footprint and a big lunch rush. They lean on undercounter refrigerators, chef bases under griddles and charbroilers, compact fryers, and countertop display cases for grab-and-go.

Little Arabia, Fourth Street and Northgate Gonzalez

In August 2022, Anaheim officially designated the Brookhurst corridor between Broadway and Ball Road as Little Arabia, which Voice of OC says is believed to be the first formally recognized Arab-American district in the country. In Santa Ana, Fourth Street (Calle Cuatro) east of Main was almost entirely Mexican by the 1930s, and Gustavo Arellano once called it "the beating heart of Orange County's Latino cultural and shopping life." Northgate Gonzalez Market started in Anaheim on January 2, 1980, when Don Miguel Gonzalez opened the first store. The chain is still based in Anaheim, had 46 stores as of August 2026, runs its flagship Mercado Gonzalez in Costa Mesa, and is converting its La Habra store to a Mercado Gonzalez.
