Ice Maker

Commercial ice machines supply ice for beverage service, food preparation, and cold-food displays. Choosing the right commercial ice maker means matching the ice format, production and storage capacity, installation requirements, and maintenance needs to your operation.

The right ice machine depends on four decisions: how much ice you use, the ice type your menu needs, the available space and utilities, and the storage needed for peak service. Use this guide to compare equipment, plan the complete installation, and identify what to confirm before ordering.

Commercial Ice Machine Types We Stock

Compare the machine's format separately from the ice it produces. Undercounter describes the installation and cabinet arrangement; cube, nugget, and flake describe the ice. Use the sections below to compare Atosa configurations, specialist ice types, and the practical requirements of your installation.

Ice Type Decides the Machine

Choose the ice format your menu or display needs before comparing equipment. Ice shape narrows the suitable models; production, storage, installation, and maintenance determine which complete setup fits your operation.

Half-Dice Cube (the restaurant default)

Half-dice and other cube formats are common options for beverage service. Compare the exact cube dimensions and shape against your cups, recipes, scooping practices, and any dispenser. Do not assume all models within a brand produce the same cube.

Full-Cube (cocktail bars, spirits, longer melt)

Larger cubes and smaller cubes serve different presentation and mixing preferences. For a cocktail program, compare the actual ice shape, usable cube size, and production requirements with the drinks you serve rather than relying on a universal melt-rate percentage.

Nugget (Chick-fil-A ice, sonic ice, healthcare, coffee)

Nugget ice is also described as pebble or pellet ice. It is selected for a different texture from conventional cubes. Compare the exact machine's output, bin or dispenser arrangement, and service requirements in the commercial nugget ice buying section below. Clinical applications require the facility's own equipment and patient-care requirements; chewable texture alone does not establish clinical suitability.

Flake (food display, seafood, healthcare)

Flake ice can be arranged around displayed food and other cooling applications. Compare its intended use with nugget and cube ice, and plan how the ice bed will be replenished during operation. The flake ice section explains the buying distinctions.

Gourmet / Top-Hat Cube (high-end bars and hotels)

Gourmet or top-hat descriptions refer to particular ice shapes, not a guarantee of production, appearance, or compatibility across all machines. Confirm the manufacturer's ice illustration and specifications for the exact model when presentation is important to your beverage program.

Choosing an Atosa Commercial Ice Machine

Start with the job the machine needs to do, not the largest production number in the model name. A compact Atosa unit at the bar, a production head serving the kitchen, and a guest-facing dispenser solve different problems. Compare the complete setup: machine, storage, filtration, utilities, and installation.

Atosa Undercounter, Production Head, or Hotel Dispenser?

  • Local ice at the point of service: compare self-contained undercounter models when staff need convenient access beside a beverage station. Production and storage are part of one cabinet, but both capacities still need to match the rush.
  • A central supply for the operation: compare production heads with a separately specified bin. Confirm the exact head-and-bin combination, any adapter required, and service access before treating the two as a complete system.
  • Guest self-service: use the separate Hotel Ice Maker collection to compare dispensing equipment. Verify whether the quoted model makes ice, dispenses stored ice, or combines both functions.

Similar-looking Atosa model numbers do not mean identical equipment. Match the complete model suffix to its specification sheet, manual, electrical supply, ice shape, and warranty. Do not transfer an older model's dimensions, refrigerant, bin capacity, or included accessories to its replacement without checking.

What Does the Atosa Quote Include?

Ask whether the quoted price covers the machine only or the machine plus bin. Check the filter system and first cartridge, connector or adapter kit, legs or other supplied components, delivery arrangements, and installation separately. An apparently lower-priced head is not a lower-priced installed system if essential components are missing.

For warranty comparisons, request the current written coverage for the exact model and application. Parts, labor, compressor coverage, exclusions, and installation requirements are separate questions. A general brand statement is not a substitute for the warranty that applies to the unit being ordered.

Undercounter Ice Machines: Measure More Than the Cabinet Width

An undercounter machine brings ice close to the bartender, barista, or service station. That can reduce trips to a central bin, but convenient placement only works when the cabinet fits the available space and the location supports water, drainage, ventilation, and cleaning access.

Check the Opening and the Operating Space

Measure the finished opening's width, depth, and height, including counter overhangs, flooring, and nearby trim. Compare those measurements with the exact installed cabinet dimensions, including its specified legs or other supports. Do not assume every machine described as undercounter fits beneath the same counter.

Then check how the ice door opens, where staff stand to scoop ice, and whether the machine can be serviced without dismantling the bar. Ventilation and service clearances are model-specific. A front grille does not automatically mean every other surface can be enclosed.

Confirm Drainage Before Choosing a Model

A convenient water supply does not solve the drain requirement. Have the installer check the machine's drain outlet, the available drain location and elevation, and the required connection method. If a gravity layout will not work, confirm an approved pump solution for that exact installation rather than assuming a pump is included.

A compact unit can also serve as a satellite machine alongside a larger central supply. Keep its demand calculation separate: measure what that station actually draws during busy periods rather than assigning the entire restaurant's daily ice requirement to it.

Commercial Nugget Ice Machines for Beverage Service

Nugget ice, also called pellet or pebble ice, is chosen for its chewable texture and the drinking experience it creates. The practical buying question is whether that ice format supports your menu: fountain beverages, iced drinks, and specialty beverage programs may call for a different texture than a spirit-forward cocktail served over a larger cube.

Choose the ice type before comparing brand or production class. A cube machine is not a substitute for a nugget machine simply because both advertise similar pounds per day. Confirm the ice description for the exact model; a collection name or a photograph alone is not enough.

Built-In Bin or Separate Nugget-Ice Head?

A self-contained unit combines making and holding ice in one cabinet. A head-only system requires a compatible storage arrangement, with the bin or dispenser specified as part of the purchase. Match storage to the busiest service window and check how quickly production can replenish what staff remove.

For a new beverage program, measure the ice used in your actual cups and recipes. Multiply that measured amount by expected drink sales, then account for other uses, busy-day variation, and the installation's effect on production. Avoid treating a generic pounds-per-drink rule as a guarantee for every cup size and menu.

Commercial Flake Ice Makers for Food Display and Cooling

Flake ice provides a moldable bed around products such as seafood and produce. Its purpose is different from serving a defined cube in a drink or offering chewable nugget ice. Choose flake for the display or cooling job it needs to perform, rather than treating all small pieces of ice as interchangeable.

For display use, plan the amount needed to fill the display and the replenishment required as ice melts or is removed during service. Display area alone is not a complete sizing method: the depth of the ice bed, room conditions, hours of operation, and refill schedule affect demand.

Flake and Nugget Are Not the Same Purchase

Flake ice and compressed nugget ice can look similar in a product image, but the intended output and application should be confirmed on the model's specification. Check whether the listing is for an ice-producing machine, a machine with its own bin, or a storage bin only.

When comparing ITV or another brand, distinguish cube, nugget, and flake equipment by the exact model and verify storage compatibility. A shared brand name or similar cabinet width is not proof that a head and bin can be paired without an approved adapter.

Production, Storage, and Recovery: Three Separate Buying Decisions

The daily production rating tells you how much ice a machine can make under the stated test conditions. Bin capacity tells you how much can be held at one time. Recovery is the time required to rebuild that supply after a busy period. A machine can meet the day's total demand and still leave the business short during lunch or dinner.

Work backward from the busiest draw. Record how much ice is removed, over what period, and how much must remain for the next service. Then compare the starting supply and production during that window with demand. Include ice carried to other stations, used for food preparation, or taken for events rather than counting beverages alone.

Review production data for the room and incoming-water temperatures expected at your location. Do not apply one fixed percentage reduction to every model. Where the manufacturer publishes multiple test conditions, those figures are more useful than assuming the headline rating will hold beside a hot cook line.

Planning a High-Output or 1,000-Pound-Class System

At higher demand, quote the whole installation rather than adding a larger head to the order. Confirm production under site conditions, usable storage, approved head-to-bin mounting, water and drainage, electrical service, and access for maintenance. A large bin does not increase the head's production rate.

Some operations benefit from a central machine; others need production closer to separate bars or service points. Multiple machines can distribute access, but they also create additional installation and maintenance requirements. Compare the complete operational arrangement instead of assuming a single large machine or two smaller ones is always the better purchase.

Compare the Installed Cost, Not Just the Ice Machine Price

When comparing Atosa with a Hoshizaki, Scotsman, or another quote, start with comparable equipment: ice type, usable output at your site, storage, dispensing functions, and included components. A nugget dispenser and a cube-making head are different systems even when the daily production figures look similar.

Separate the equipment price from the bin, filtration, adapters, delivery, plumbing, electrical work, and commissioning. Then compare ongoing filter cartridges, cleaning, service access, water use, and energy information available for each exact model. Avoid applying a blanket savings percentage across an entire brand.

Which Features Will Your Operation Actually Use?

Consider the practical value of diagnostics, accessible filters, cleaning controls, and local service support. A feature deserves weight when it helps your staff operate or maintain the machine; a long feature list alone does not establish that a unit is the better fit.

For a purchase, compare the full quote and expected ownership costs. For lease-to-own or equipment financing, review the payment schedule, total obligation, and ownership terms. For equipment rental, confirm eligible equipment, included service, exclusions, and end-of-term options in the actual agreement. Financing and rental are not the same arrangement, and neither should be described as automatically including maintenance.

Buying New Versus Evaluating a Used Machine

If you are comparing a new machine with a used offer, include the cost of inspection, transport, installation, cleaning, any missing bin or filter components, and likely repairs. Ask for the model and serial number, maintenance history, and demonstrated operation rather than relying on a photograph of a clean exterior. This comparison does not imply that The Restaurant Warehouse sells used ice machines.

Sizing Your Ice Machine by Business Type

Use the operation type to identify where ice goes, then measure demand. Seats, room counts, and daily customer counts are starting points, not a complete equipment specification. A beverage-heavy menu, outdoor service, or a concentrated event can change the requirement substantially.

Operation Demand to measure Buying priority
Café or coffee shop Ice per actual drink recipe and peak drink sales Access at the station, ice texture, and refill capacity
Restaurant Beverages plus kitchen, service, and event uses Daily production and the busiest service window
Bar Drink preparation, service ice, and separate stations Ice shape, storage, and recovery between rushes
Food display Initial ice bed and replacement during operating hours Flake suitability, storage, and handling
Hotel Guest use plus breakfast, bar, and event demand Distribution and dispensing; see hotel ice makers

Build an allowance for your busiest realistic conditions, then compare the manufacturer's production data at suitable room and water temperatures. Read the separate production, storage, and recovery guidance before finalizing a model.

Undercounter vs Modular: Which Chassis

Two chassis formats cover almost every commercial ice-machine installation.

Undercounter (self-contained machine and bin)

A self-contained undercounter machine combines ice production and a bin in one cabinet. Installation still requires the correct water, drain, electrical, and ventilation arrangements. Check installed height and service access; the word undercounter does not guarantee a fit beneath every counter.

Modular (head unit sits on a separate bin)

A modular arrangement uses a production head with separately specified storage or dispensing equipment. Match the head, bin, adapter, and installation instructions as a complete system. Neither a shared brand nor cabinet width alone establishes compatibility.

Hotel Dispenser (guest self-serve)

Guest-facing dispensing equipment serves a different access pattern from a staff scoop bin. Verify whether the specified unit makes ice, dispenses ice supplied by another machine, or combines those functions. Use the dedicated Hotel Ice Maker collection for the guest-service selection.

Air Cooled vs Water Cooled

Air-cooled equipment rejects condenser heat to the surrounding air. Plan the specified intake, discharge, ambient conditions, and service clearances rather than pushing a unit into an enclosed opening simply because its cabinet fits.

Water-cooled equipment uses water for condenser cooling and requires a suitable supply and drainage arrangement. Compare water use, utility costs, local restrictions, and the specific installation requirements. A water-cooled designation does not remove the need to follow the unit's operating limits.

If a remote-condenser model is being considered, include its approved components, line routing, and installation work in the comparison. Choose the cooling arrangement after reviewing the site, not from production capacity alone.

Water, Drain, and Electrical Requirements

Have the installer review the exact model before purchase. There is no single inlet size, water-pressure range, drain distance, electrical circuit, or ventilation clearance that safely applies to every commercial ice machine.

  • Water: confirm the required supply, pressure, shutoff, connection size, and water-treatment provisions.
  • Drainage: confirm the ice-making and bin drain arrangements, routing, slope or approved pump, and local plumbing requirements.
  • Electrical: use the nameplate and manual for voltage, phase, plug, amperage, circuit protection, and any dedicated-circuit requirements.
  • Access: measure the delivery route, installed opening, ventilation space, and room to service the unit.

Specify filtration by the machine manufacturer's requirements and local water conditions. A sediment cartridge, a taste-and-odor filter, and scale treatment are not automatically interchangeable. Compare the filter system and compatible replacement cartridges in our Water Filters collection; follow the applicable capacity and replacement instructions.

Featured Atosa Undercounter Ice Machines

Start with these catalog references when comparing the compact Atosa formats. Check the current product listing and manufacturer documentation for the exact dimensions, daily output under stated conditions, built-in storage, and installation requirements.

Do not use the YR450-AP-161 as an undercounter comparison: Atosa identifies it as a modular ice maker. Its complete storage and installation arrangement must be checked separately.

Featured Atosa Modular Heads and Bins

The current catalog includes the YRM0450A-161, YRM0600A-261, YRM0800A-261, and YRS0350A-161, YRS0450A-161, and YRS0600A-261 model references. Other head listings include the YR450-AP-161, YR450S-AP-161, and YR800-AP-261.

Storage-bin listings include the CYR400P, CYR700P, BYR0300, and BYR0400. These are options to assess, not a statement that any bin fits any head. Request a confirmed compatible combination and any required adapter before ordering.

Verify the precise model and included equipment against Atosa's ice-machine information and the applicable manual. Confirm current availability and pricing when requesting the quote.

Other Catalog Models and Bin Compatibility

ITV catalog entries cover different ice styles, machine formats, and storage components. Compare an exact model's specified function with your application rather than relying on brand-wide descriptions. Confirm the bin or dispenser pairing, any adapter required, and current availability as part of the complete quote.

Featured Brema Nugget and Flake

The catalog's nugget references include the TB852A-HC, TB1404A-HC, TM140A-HC, and TM250A-HC. The GB903A-HC is listed separately for flake ice rather than nugget ice.

Check whether the exact listing includes storage or is a head-only purchase. The BIN110 and BIN200 are bin listings, not ice-producing machines. Confirm the manufacturer's approved pairing, any adapter, actual capacity, and current availability before ordering.

Hotel Ice Machines

Hotel equipment remains in its own collection because guest access and dispensing need a focused comparison. Check dispensing clearance, guest use, cleaning access, installation requirements, and how the unit is supplied with ice. Do not treat a dispenser's storage rating as its daily production.

See the Hotel Ice Maker collection for the dedicated selection, including the Atosa models listed there. Size for actual guest and service demand rather than assuming one room-count rule applies to every property.

Cleaning and Maintenance Schedule

Build a documented maintenance routine around the exact machine's manual and the conditions at your location. Scale, contamination, blocked airflow, and drainage problems need different checks; a cleaning button does not replace every manual cleaning or inspection step.

  • Routine handling: use clean scoops and containers, inspect accessible ice-contact areas, and keep contaminants out of stored ice.
  • Airflow and drainage: inspect and maintain filters, accessible condenser areas, and drains as directed. Stop using equipment that shows leakage or unsafe operation.
  • Descaling and sanitizing: use the approved chemicals, sequence, concentrations, and intervals. Do not mix cleaners or use the same procedure for every evaporator material.
  • Water treatment: record cartridge changes and check whether local water conditions require a different service interval or treatment approach.
  • Professional service: refer electrical, refrigeration, repeated shutdowns, and unresolved production problems to a qualified technician.

Reduced production or malformed ice can have several causes. Review safe operator checks and the manual rather than assuming a filter replacement will resolve every fault. Our commercial ice machine troubleshooting guide provides a starting point for further investigation.

Why Buy Your Commercial Ice Machine From The Restaurant Warehouse

Tell us the ice type you need, your estimated daily and peak-service demand, and the available installation space. We can help compare the listed equipment and assemble a quote that identifies the machine, storage, accessories, and delivery arrangements rather than leaving those details until installation.

Review current product pricing and the written quote for freight, delivery services, availability, and model-specific warranty information. If cash flow is part of the decision, compare equipment financing and lease-to-own with rental options; eligibility and terms must be confirmed for the proposed equipment.

Commercial Ice Makers with Water Dispensers: Check the Complete System

An ice maker, an ice dispenser, and an ice-and-water dispenser are not interchangeable descriptions. An ice maker produces ice. A dispenser delivers stored ice through a dispensing mechanism, but may need a separate compatible ice-making head or another approved method of loading ice. An ice-and-water unit also provides a drinking-water outlet. Confirm each function in the exact model specification rather than assuming that every hotel dispenser makes ice or dispenses water.

For a hotel, staff breakroom, cafeteria, or other self-service area, compare how people will use the equipment as well as how much ice it produces. Cup and bucket clearance, control position, refill demand, and access for cleaning can be as important as the cabinet footprint. Healthcare applications also require the facility's own infection-control and equipment-selection review; an enclosed chute or chewable ice format alone does not establish suitability.

Question before ordering What to confirm
Does it make ice? Whether the quote includes an integrated ice maker, a separate production head, or a dispenser only.
Does it dispense drinking water? A water connection for ice production does not itself establish a drinking-water outlet. Confirm whether dispensed water is chilled or unchilled.
Will the ice and dispenser work together? Manufacturer-approved head, ice format, dispenser, and adapter combination. Similar cabinet widths do not prove compatibility.
Can it handle the busiest service period? Daily production, usable storage, and dispensing performance are separate ratings. Compare the expected peak draw with replenishment during that period.
Will it fit the users and location? Container clearance, dispensing controls, accessibility requirements, ventilation, service access, power, potable water, and drainage.
Can staff maintain it properly? Access to the bin, chute, drip tray, water outlet, and other food-contact components, plus the prescribed cleaning and sanitizing procedures.

Put water filtration, required adapters, installation work, and any separate stand or dispenser in the same quote as the production head. Do not assume these components are included. For a guest-facing installation, review the dedicated hotel equipment options linked from this guide while using this collection to compare the broader commercial ice-making system.

Do Commercial Ice Makers Keep Ice Frozen?

An insulated ice bin is not the same as a refrigerated freezer. Insulation slows heat transfer, but does not actively refrigerate the stored ice. For example, the Scotsman UC2024 and UC2724 user manual explicitly describes a storage bin that is insulated but not refrigerated and explains that ice melting during use is normal. Do not assume that an undercounter cabinet or a modular commercial system provides frozen storage simply because it has a compressor for making ice.

Production and storage do different jobs. The machine replenishes ice, while the bin provides a reserve for service. Confirm how the specified system handles meltwater and what drainage it requires. Do not apply a portable countertop machine's meltwater-recycling description to a plumbed commercial ice machine; follow the installation and operating instructions for the actual model.

If you need to store packaged ice for an extended period, plan suitable commercial freezer storage separately from ice production. Check packaging, food-contact handling, usable freezer capacity, and the operating procedure for that application. A larger insulated bin is not a substitute for active frozen storage.

What to Check When Ice Melts Faster Than Expected

Start with the manufacturer's operating limits and installation requirements. Check ambient conditions, ventilation, bin-door closure, drainage, and whether the machine and storage capacity match the service pattern. Keep scoops and storage surfaces clean, and follow the prescribed maintenance schedule. Unexpected standing water, reduced production, or persistent performance changes warrant a qualified service review rather than an assumption that the bin needs a lower thermostat setting.

Clumping by itself does not identify a single fault or prove that the ice maker needs replacement. Review the ice format, storage and handling conditions, and the manufacturer's troubleshooting guidance. Do not strike the bin or use improvised tools that could damage equipment or contaminate the ice.

Refrigerator Ice Maker or Dedicated Commercial Ice Machine?

If you are considering a refrigerator with a built-in ice maker for a business, evaluate food storage and beverage-ice production as separate requirements. Refrigerator capacity does not tell you the daily ice output, and an ice maker's daily rating does not establish how much ice is available during a short rush. Compare the exact appliance specifications with your actual menu, operating hours, and peak service demand.

A dedicated commercial ice machine lets you select the ice format, production rate, and storage arrangement independently from the refrigerator or freezer used for ingredients. Before choosing any appliance for a foodservice operation, confirm its intended commercial use, applicable sanitation listing, local approval requirements, warranty terms, and access for cleaning and service. Avoid blanket assumptions about residential output, equipment lifespan, or warranty coverage; those depend on the exact product and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Ice Machines

How much ice does a restaurant need per day?

Measure ice used for actual drinks, kitchen work, events, and other service needs. Account for peak periods and busy-day variation, then compare production under the expected room and water conditions. Customer counts alone do not determine the right machine.

What size commercial ice machine do I need?

Choose using daily production, peak storage demand, recovery between service periods, available space, and utilities. Confirm the full head-and-bin system where storage is separate. A larger bin does not increase daily production.

What type of ice is best for restaurants?

Choose the format for the application: compare cubes for beverage service, nugget for a chewable-ice program, and flake for suitable display or cooling uses. Confirm the exact ice shape on the model specification.

What is the difference between air cooled and water cooled ice machines?

Air-cooled equipment rejects condenser heat to surrounding air; water-cooled equipment uses water for that cooling function. Compare ventilation, water use, utilities, local restrictions, and manufacturer requirements for the exact installation.

What is the difference between a modular and undercounter ice machine?

An undercounter unit generally combines production and storage in one cabinet. A modular head needs separately specified storage or dispensing equipment. Actual dimensions, utility requirements, and approved combinations determine which will fit.

How much does a commercial ice machine cost?

Compare current equipment pricing together with the bin, filtration, adapters, delivery, installation, utilities, and ongoing maintenance. Quote comparable ice types and complete systems rather than treating a head-only price as the installed cost.

What brands of commercial ice machines do you carry?

This collection contains Atosa and other catalog listings, including ITV and Brema references. Confirm the exact model's current availability and configuration before ordering. Choose by the required ice and complete-system fit, not by a blanket claim about the brand.

Do I need an NSF certified ice machine?

Confirm the sanitation certification and electrical listing required by your local authority for the intended installation. Verify those marks for the exact model rather than assuming that a general collection description establishes compliance.

What is an ice machine with bin?

It may mean a self-contained machine with integrated storage or a separately matched production head and bin. Confirm what is included in the listing or quote. A bin sold on its own does not make ice.

How long do commercial ice machines last?

Service life depends on the equipment, installation, water conditions, duty cycle, and maintenance. Compare warranty and service support, keep maintenance records, and do not treat a generic lifespan estimate as a guarantee.

How often should a commercial ice machine be cleaned?

Follow the manufacturer's cleaning and sanitizing schedule and the needs of your site. Water quality and the operating environment can require more attention. Record the work and use approved chemicals and procedures.

Do commercial ice machines need a water filter?

Follow the machine manufacturer's water-treatment requirements and assess local water conditions. Match the system's function and flow capacity to the application; filtration and scale treatment are not interchangeable. Follow the specified replacement instructions.

What ice machine is best for a coffee shop?

Start with the ice used in your actual recipes and peak drink volume, then compare cube and nugget options. Check local access at the beverage station, storage, drainage, and the room needed for installation and servicing.

What ice machine is best for a bar?

Match the cube or nugget format to the drinks you serve and storage to the busiest period. Consider whether ice should be made at the bar or supplied from a central system. Plan recovery before the next rush.

Do commercial ice machines need a drain?

Plan drainage according to the exact machine and storage arrangement. Have the installer confirm outlet locations, drain routing, local plumbing requirements, and any approved pump arrangement before purchase.

What ice machine does Chick-fil-A use?

If the goal is chewable ice, compare commercial nugget machines by their specified ice format, production, storage, and installation requirements. A restaurant-chain reference does not establish which brand or model is right for your business.

Can I buy a used commercial ice machine?

When comparing a used offer with a new machine, consider condition, maintenance records, demonstrated operation, missing components, installation, warranty, and repair exposure. This buying comparison does not mean that The Restaurant Warehouse sells used ice machines.
